Questionable Workmanship, January 10, 2011

Upon receiving this item I opened the two boxes to discover a squashed beetle or insect of some sort that had left its guts on a shelf for the unit. This was an unpleasant surprise however I didn't let it bother me. From there on it was an ordeal. Some of the pieces had slight defects and or cracks, however I was relieved that they wouldn't be visible based on where they were. During assembly I noticed many times holes barely lined up and things had to be forced into fitting. One of the doors didn't even have a hole all the way through for the handle. I actually had to risk marring the unit and drill a hole myself. Fortunately I've been putting these types of things together for family and myself for a long time so it went OK. This is one of the worst units I've dealt with in terms of tolerances and how the pilot holes and fitting set up. Initially I was very weary about purchasing this product based on the other review and another worse review on a different website. However, I loved the look of the item online and the price was right was what I wanted to spend. Having put together a few much smaller items around the house (i.e. a bookcase here and there), I knew it may be a challenge; however, it was actually easier to put together than I planned based on other reviews. Overall it took me 3 hours, but I was doing it by myself and it probably would have taken about 2 hrs with another person to help. The directions were short (6 pages) but pretty easy to follow. The really difficult portion is putting together the back slabs and then getting on the final side- again would have been easier with someone else. I did not have to make any special holes or call someone for rescue. The materials are overall pretty good quality; there was only one scratched piece that went in the back.
